  • Establishes the importance of the topic and method

  • Sets the context for the study

  • Moves from topic to topic rather than from citation to citation

Purpose of the study (12 points)

  • Describes the purpose of the research study

  • Includes a problem statement

  • Hypothesis is stated (if applicable)

  • Hypothesis is explained as directional or non-directional; rationale for directionality is provided and is clearly connected to literature review (if applicable)

  • Research questions are stated

  • Research questions are clearly related to hypothesis (if applicable)

Participants (10 points)

  • Detailed description of the population to whom generalizations are to be made is included or, in case of a qualitative study, a description of study participants

  • Description includes relevant characteristics of the population (e.g., educational level / medical specialty, if applicable, study setting/context)

  • Sample selection is explained

  • Rationale for sample selection method is provided

  • Indication of whether pseudonyms for any identifiable group or place are used to protect identity

  • At least one factor that may bias your sample is presented and discussed

  • A description of how sampling bias may influence or limit the results of the study is included

  • Methods for controlling sampling bias are described

Variables – Quantitative or Mixed Methods Studies* (6 points)

  • Independent and dependent variables are identified

  • Independent and dependent variables are operationally defined (e.g., anxiety, achievement)

  • Extraneous or confounding variables that may affect the independent or dependent variables are identified

  • Methods for controlling extraneous or confounding variables are explained

Research design (20 points)

  • Paradigmatic Framework

  • Research design is described

  • Rationale for research design is included

  • Clear indication of methods - quantitative (e.g.. experimental, quasi-experiment, causal-comparative, correlational, survey), qualitative (e.g., interview, observation, case study)

  • Mixed-method approach is described

  • Advantages and limitations of research design are discussed

  • Role of the researcher(s) in the data collection process is included (e.g., conducting interviews, document review)

Data collection (10 points)

  • Describes instruments that might be used to collect data

  • Explains rationale for instrument selection

  • Content, constructs, questions, and or prompts are described in detail

  • Data collection methods and timelines are included

  • Quan instrument validation is described

  • Quan instrument reliability is described

MMR Data Analysis Plan (10 points)

  • Describes data and how they will be prepared for analysis

  • Explain mixed methods analysis

  • Explains type of analysis to be performed

  • Software or data analysis tools needed

Legitimation Issues (8)

Legitimation is the degree to which MMR integration of qualitative and quantitative research strengthens and provides legitimacy, fidelity, authority, weight, soundness, credibility, trustworthiness, and even standing in the results and interpretations in MMR.

Format and references (6 points)

  • Includes at least six peer-reviewed references (note that your references can also include references to your methods, as well as those relevant to your topic)
