EDEA 6202-Educational Improvement Project 2020

EDEA 6202: Educational Improvement Project (year-long) Alternative Assessment Proposal

Title: The Development of a School Improvement & Implementation Plan for [Name of School]

Protocol:

  1. After getting approval from your principal and SSIII (MoE) for conducting the whole school exercise, please proceed to develop a participatory and strategic School Improvement & Implementation Plan (SIIP) for your named school.

  2. You are to (1) collaboratively gather robust evidence for the current functioning of your school in key areas specified with indicators and instruments you develop (School Self-Assessment); (2) review that data with a core team of stakeholders using zoom or other online platform (principal must be a member of the team); (3) make judgements about what is working well and what needs attention (Evaluation); (4) use the evidence to develop a comprehensive school improvement plan which strategizes key priorities to create a high performing institution (school development planning); (5) develop a separate change strategy designed to promote successful implementation and sustainability of change efforts; (6) develop for years 1 and 2, action plans for the 4 to 6 priorities or goals.

Definitions

SIP- A school improvement plan is a road map that sets out the changes a school needs to make to improve the level of student achievement, and shows how and when these changes will be made. A strategic plan is not a school improvement plan because it is inconsistent with the definition of school and continuous improvement.

Priorities are goals, the main measures taken to improve and raise standards.

Targets (objectives) are the key outcomes the school hopes to achieve.

Tasks (Actions) are areas to be covered in reaching each target.

Action Plans specify Targets, Tasks, Time-Frames, Resources and Remits, including arrangements for Monitoring and Evaluation.

An Implementation Plan details the implementation strategy to bring the SIP to life. It details structures, resources, and actions required for effecting school change.

A Theory of Action (TOA) makes use of an if-then structure to conceptualize the activities needed to solve the main issues confronted by the school and the expected outcomes of the specified priorities and targets.

A monitoring and evaluation framework describes the system used to judge whether the plan is working. It includes the data collected from the KPIs

The change strategydefines the way the school will generally address change in and around it. It includes the mechanism that aims to minimize any negative effects the changing events bring about, while at the same time capitalizing on the transformation. We recommend Kotter’s Model.

SSE- School self-evaluation[1] is a collaborative, reflective process of internal school review. It provides teachers with a means of systematically looking at how they teach and how pupils learn and helps schools and teachers to improve outcomes for learners. This is also called a comprehensive needs assessment.

A School Improvement PLC is a professional learning community (PLC) for school improvement where groups of teachers and key school stakeholders meets regularly, shares expertise, and work collaboratively at the school level to improve student outcomes.

[1] According to the Department of Education in England, “Self-evaluation leading to sustained self-improvement is therefore at the core of the school improvement policy. Effective self-evaluation, and the actions that flow from it, should deliver improved educational outcomes and experiences for all pupils. Self-evaluation must be an integral part of the school development planning process with the resulting actions and targets captured in School Development Plans”
