What is Action Research?

In education there are three purposes for action research

1. Development of the individual teacher

2. Professional learning

3. School improvement

 

Here are some definitions

  1. It is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action. The primary reason for engaging in action research is to assist the “actor” in improving and/or refining his or her actions. (Richard Sagor)

  2. Action research refers to a wide variety of evaluative, investigative, and analytical research methods designed to diagnose problems or weaknesses—whether organizational, academic, or instructional—and help educators develop practical solutions to address them quickly and efficiently.

  3. The iidentification of strategies of planned action which are implemented, and then systematically submitted to observation, reflection and change.

  4. A community-based study, co-operative enquiry, involving action science and action learning  commonly used for improving conditionsand practices in a range of environments.

  5. Action research is inquiry or research in the context of focused efforts to improve the quality of an organization and its performance. It typically is designed and conducted by practitioners who analyze the data to improve their own practice. Action research can be done by individuals or by teams of colleagues.

  6. Action research is a form of collective, self-reflective inquiry that participants in social situations undertake to improve: .1) the rationality and justice of their own social or educational practices; .2) the participants' understanding of these practices and the situations in which they carry out these practices.
    Groups of participants can be teachers, students, parents, workplace colleagues, social activists or any other community members ± that is, any group with a shared concern and the motivation and will to address their shared concern
